Our Program for the Development of Original Work

The Playground aims to provide a stimulating and collaborative environment for writers to develop their work to its fullest potential with an eye towards a fully-staged production.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR:

  • Scripts by innovative writers committed to creating work of the highest quality in a collaborative workshop process.
  • Theater and Film scripts of any length or genre. Completed drafts only.
  • Dialogue driven scripts to maximize the benefit from the workshop process

WHAT WE PROVIDE:

  • A focused workshop process with an experienced team of artists (the “Play Group”) including Director, Dramaturg, and Actors
  • Staged reading followed by moderated talk back with audience
  • Consideration of the piece for future full production
  • Exposure and networking with producers, directors, theater companies and industry professionals that may be interested in you or your work

IF ACCEPTED:

  • A defined rehearsal process will be organized: Pre-rehearsal meetings with Director and Dramaturge
  • Minimum 12 hours of active rehearsal time with the actors, divided into at least three rehearsal sessions
  • Analysis session with Director/Dramaturge and Production Liaison following each rehearsal session
  • Playwright is expected to bring new pages to each rehearsal, making the changes that were agreed upon at the last rehearsal in addition to personal edits
  • A public staged reading followed by a moderated audience discussion is produced at the end of the rehearsal process.
  • Approximately one week following staged reading there will be a wrap-up session with Director/Dramaturge and Executive Producer.
  • Playwright will be paired with project-specific Production Liaison from State of Play Productions.
  • Casting process is handled through Director and Production Liaison.

SUBMISSION PROCESS:

  • Blind Submissions: In a commitment to remove any unintended gender/racial/cultural bias from the initial script evaluation process, State of Play Theatre has adopted a blind submission policy for open submissions. We request that author name and biographical information be removed from the script file (including title page) so as to allow our staff to evaluate the text on its literary qualities and potential for production only.-On the bottom of each page of the script, please put the page number, title of the play, your initials and phone number.
  • Scripts must be in Word or .pdf format
  • If your script is not properly scrubbed of author information and formatted, our designated staff member will send you an email requesting specified alterations
  • All scripts will be read
  • If your script is under consideration, you will be contacted.
  • Please submit your script in form below.

Scripts accepted for the workshop process are not guaranteed a future full production, but are taken under consideration.
